Maternity Leave

Maternity Leave

Remember that statutory maternity leave isn’t paid.  If you as the employer going to provide any form of payment or benefits when your employee is on maternity leave, you can specify the terms on which that will be done.

Tip

Your employee must inform you in writing of the dates on which she intends to commence maternity leave and return to work.  This allows you to make alternative arrangements in advance to have her work done by someone else.

REMEMBER

You don’t have to pay your employee for any part of her maternity leave, but you must enable her to claim unemployment insurance benefits. An employee is entitled to at least four consecutive month’s unpaid maternity leave.
